Dear Friends
Sunday 15 June is Trinity Sunday – the day when the whole church celebrates the mystery of the Godhead, the divine dance of relationship. Because our church is named after the Trinity we will celebrate the day with rousing hymns of praise and a special lunch. It will be the last major festival in our church’s calendar until we celebrate Christ the King at the end of November as we turn once again to Advent. Between now and then there is almost a breathing space … a time to take stock as we diligently count the Sundays of Trinity – this year about 23 of them. The colours in church and my stole will turn green – signifying growth and the nourishment of faith. Our church readings will gently tell us of events that happened in Jesus’ life – the people he healed, the people who were raised from the dead, his interactions with folk and the discussion he shared with those who followed him.
The season of Trinity is a gentle time, a time of reflection – but in a different way to the rigours of Advent and Lent. As the weather hopefully warms up and we all naturally slow down…. so it is a time when we can take stock and notice the world around us a bit more as we get out and about whether in the villages, town or on holiday.
Perhaps this year we could intentionally take the Trinity with us into our sunny days. God is our Creator, and there is much to praise Him for and notice in our world as we travel or sit in our gardens. From the bees to the beautiful architectural edifices, we can acknowledge and ascribe praise and thanksgiving to our God who is transcendent and yet in all.
We can also cherish the company and gift of each other. We can notice the ‘God between’ us in all our connections with those we meet and spend time with. This may be friends we have known for years, or the shop assistant who serves us in Tesco. It doesn’t matter. We can appreciate and notice God’s presence between us and the other.
And then there’s the God within. Attention to our prayer life is always vital. It is only when we give our time to God intentionally that God is able to encourage our spiritual growth and our awareness of Him. God transcendent. God between. God within. Jesus shows us how to balance these and live into them for the daily glory of God.
Happy Trinity!
with love, Liz
